Protonix blocks producing stomach acid. It is prescribed to heal a disorder called erosive esophagitis (a serious inflammation in the passage towards the stomach) attributable to a persistent backflow of stomach acid (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Later, it may be prescribed to keep up healing and stop a relapse. It is also utilized in the treating conditions marked by constant overproduction of stomach acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
